On the Streets of Hailey

Zac and I had decided to spend our independence day this year in Idaho's Sun Valley. So we rolled into the yarn-bombed streets of Hailey and went immediately to buy tickets for the three-day "Days of the Old West" rodeo.

It should probably come as a surprise to no-one (since we were at a rodeo) that once we sat down and opened our programs, Zac realized that one of the timers was none other than our friend of cupcake-shop fame, Mindy!

On Tuesday, we made sure to explore the local brewery at lunchtime. We ended up liking it so much, we came back later for an outdoor concert and a couple more beers.

The Forest Service ranger we stopped in to see directed us to some primitive (read: free) campsites just a short way out of town. We snatched one up just in time. Primitive does not mean un-crowded, especially during the Fourth of July week.

On the Fourth we hollered and waved along with the rest of the town during the parade and stayed to watch the crit bike race through the streets afterwards.

Oh, and we had a celebrity sighting in the parade crowd: Zac spotted former Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Bareback Rider Kelly Wardell. I made sure to point out that even former Wrangler National Finals Rodeo bareback riders wear shorts.

We were excited for the rodeo that night; unfortunately, so was everyone else in town. When we got to the office where we had bought our tickets before, it was closed and the tickets were gone. But we wandered around the grounds until we spotted Mindy and flagged her down. She immediately introduced us to the secretary, two pickup men, and another timer. Mindy knows almost everyone in the western United States -- and possibly the world.

Anyway, she graciously worked her magic to get us seats and we waltzed right on in. The show was well worth it. We spotted several hometown bull riders, a couple of cowgirl hoochi-mamas, and three bulls and bucking horses named after us!

What a week. Happy Fourth Nineteenth of July!
